Democracy Now!: Jeremy Scahill: Despite Antiwar Rhetoric, Clinton/Obama Plans Would Keep U.S. Mercenaries, Troops in Iraq for Years to Come (2/28/08) by Juan Gonzalez & Amy Goodman
After playing a clip of Tim Russert questioning the Democratic candidates' willingness to oblige a hypothetical Iraqi government call for U.S. troop withdrawal, Scahill says that
what Russert should have said to them is, over 80 percent of Iraqis, conservatively, say they want the United States out now; will you respect the will of the Iraqi people? Of course, that question is not going to be asked by Tim Russert or Brian Williams on one of these debates. But the reality is, listening to Obama and Clinton, they’re giving the impression that what they’re going to do is immediately begin a total withdrawal of U.S. forces.
Contrary to this impression fostered by campaign reporters, Scahill's "looked very carefully at both of their Iraq plans," and found they've "adopted the congressional Democratic position that would leave open the option of keeping tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq for many years."
