New York Times: Chinese Calls Prompts CBC to Pull Show (11/8/07) by Ian Austen

An airing of a documentary on Falun Gong, a spiritual movement banned in China, was canceled at the last minute by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which admits "its decision was influenced in part by phone calls from Chinese diplomats in Canada." Despite this admission, the Times reporter still feels obligated to print a CBC News executive's claim to be "happy we didn't air it.... In the end, we got the journalism right." He may attribute his happiness to a twisted idea of "right" journalism, but a more plausible source is alluded to by the Toronto professor who says "the thing that comes to mind is the [2008 Beijing] Olympics," and their "substantial ad revenue": "Was the CBC concerned this might jeopardize it pulling off the coverage of the Olympics?"
