StopBigMedia.com: Columbus Speaks Out Against Consolidation (3/8/07) by Timothy Karr
In front of "nearly 400 people" who turned out "to testify for more than four hours about the threat of sweeping changes to the nation’s media ownership rules" at a public meeting in Columbus, Ohio, Democratic Federal Communications Commissioner Michael Copps declared that the growing success of the media reform movement has him "ready to play offense":Let’s talk this evening about more than just preventing bad new rules, but about revisiting the bad old rules that got us into this mess in the first place. Let’s talk about actually bringing back positive public interest obligations to our broadcast media.
But attending Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell's admission that the meeting was his "first foray into the media ownership debate" was a grounding reminder that this was "the first community-organized forum attended by commissioners from both sides of the aisle."
