New York Times: The Education of McCain (8/19/08) by David Brooks
A predictably terrible Brooks piece talks of how media "maverick" John McCain has been forced by necessity, and against his wishes, to adjust to conventional campaigning. As the pull-quote puts it, "A maverick adjusts to the long, hard slog." Brooks gets specific here:The man who hopes to inspire a new generation of Americans now attacks Obama daily. It is the only way he can get the networks to pay attention.
This overt dissembling is just one of the bizarre examples given to contrast the real McCain (whose mind Brooks of course gives us the impression he can read) with what McCain has been forced to do as a presidential candidate.
