Nightline: Ad Profits Overshadowing Journalism?

3/1/02

In response to reports that ABC is considering plans to replace “Nightline” with a David Letterman show, FAIR issued the following statement:

"If Disney/ABC replaces Nightline with more entertainment programming, it will be strong evidence of the threat to journalism represented by TV networks that have been taken over by entertainment conglomerates," said FAIR's Peter Hart. "We've been critical of Nightline's narrow guest list, but the issue for Disney is not the quality of Nightline’s journalism or the number of viewers who watch. The show is in danger simply because it doesn’t attract the kind of audience that big advertisers most want to sell to.”
