
Lawrence Soley is the Colnik Professor of Communication and Professor of Journalism at Marquette University in Milwaukee. Before joining the Marquette faculty in 1992, he was a professor at the University of Minnesota (1987-1992), associate professor at the City University of New York's Baruch College (1982-1986), and assistant professor at Pennsylvania State University (1981-1982) and the University of Alabama (1980-1981). Professor Soley holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University (1981) and Master's (1976) and Bachelor's (1974) degrees from California State University-Northridge.
His books include Free Radio (Westview Press, 1998), Leasing the Ivory Tower (South End Press, 1995), The News Shapers (Praeger, 1992) and Clandestine Radio Broadcasting (Praeger, 1987, with J. Nichols).
His research has appeared in Journal of Communication, Newspaper Research Journal, Journal of Advertising, Journalism Quarterly, Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Journal of Advertising Research and other scholarly journals. He has also written for a variety of newspapers and magazines, including City Pages, Milwaukee Shepherd Express, Mother Jones, Utne Reader, Dissent, Covert Action Quarterly, and Dollars and Sense.
Soley's research and writing has won several awards. Most recently, Soley won a Project Censored Award for the third most important story of 1997, which he wrote for Covert Action Quarterly. Studies of scholarly research publication in Journalism Quarterly reported Dr. Soley to be one of the most frequently published researchers in the field of journalism and mass communication.
