This week's show:
Broadcast dates: 7/23/04-7/29/04

Guests:
John Nichols on Election 2004
George Farah on open debates

This week on CounterSpin: There has been a flurry of stories appearing recently that are reminiscent of the 2000 Florida election debacle. We're told the Kerry and Bush teams are lining up lawyers, the electronic voting story is still in the news and Florida has just scrapped plans to purge 48,000 supposed felons from it voter rolls. The Nation Magazine's John Nichols will join us to sort through some of these important elections stories.

Also this week, Presidential debates are approaching, but don't expect a rollicking exchange of ideas or an elaboration of specific policy plans--US presidential debates haven't looked like that for years. But why not? And what changes could help debates really serve as a forum for the public to learn something about the differences between the candidates? We'll hear from George Farah, executive director of the group Open Debates.

CounterSpin is FAIR's weekly radio show, hosted by Janine Jackson, Steve Rendall and Peter Hart. It's heard on more than 125 noncommercial stations across the United States and Canada.

CounterSpin provides a critical examination of the major stories every week, and exposes what the mainstream media might have missed in their own coverage. Combining lively discussion and a thoughtful media critique, CounterSpin is unlike any other show on the dial.

CounterSpin exposes and highlights biased and inaccurate news; censored stories; sexism, racism and homophobia in the news; the power of corporate influence; gaffes and goofs by leading TV pundits; TV news' narrow political spectrum; attacks on free speech; and more.

"You should tune in to CounterSpin, the program that sees things and says things about the media you'll see no place else."
--Ben Bagdikian, author of The Media Monopoly
