"In Wyoming, Conservatives Feeling Left Behind" is the headline on a report by the New York Times' Jack Healy (11/19/12) on how "since the election, a blanket of baffled worry has descended on conservatives here like early snow across the plains, deepening a sense that traditional, rural and overwhelmingly white states in the center of the country are losing touch with an increasingly diverse and urban American electorate."

One of the many "traditional," "self-reliant" white guys in Wyoming the New York Times talked to about urban, minority "takers" and "parasites."
Healy reports:
Republican explanations for Mitt Romney's loss–that Democrats turned out the urban vote, that the United States is no longer its "traditional" self, or that Mr. Obama had showered "gifts" on women, minorities and young voters–resonated in some conservative political circles here in the state capital….
What worries conservatives here is that an increasingly diverse and Democratic polity will embrace healthcare mandates, higher domestic spending and a bigger government role in people's economic lives.
"It's a mind-set change–that government is here to take care of me," Healy quotes one Wyoming resident. Another asserted, "The young vote and certainly the minority vote went toward the perspective of 'What can I get?'"
The publisher of a right-wing local paper "said the election vindicated conservative politicians and commentators who talked about the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income tax, about makers and takers. 'The parasites now outnumber the producers.'"
Yet another of Healy's sources summed up "what he saw as the difference between conservative, self-reliant Wyoming and liberal precincts along the coasts and in cities. 'They think, "What can he do for me?" as opposed to what Kennedy said in the '60s, "What can I do for my country?"'"
You get the picture: The "minority vote," aka the "urban vote," are "takers" and "parasites," unlike the "self-reliant," "traditional" folk in Wyoming. Did Healy mention that they're 86 percent white there? Yes, he did.
Twenty paragraphs into this 24-graf story, Healy notes that this appraisal is "complicated" by the fact that, when it comes to federal spending, Wyoming is definitely in the "taker" category:
A 2011 study by the Pew States Project found that Wyoming received more federal funds per resident than any other state, largely because of royalties from mining and drilling. That $3,757 per person went to healthcare, transportation, education and other government programs.
With that and another paragraph on Wyoming's economic dependence on resource extraction from federal land, the story is roughly one part reality to 12 parts self-congratulatory race-baiting.

Funny … I don't recall reporters being dispatched to those "liberal urban centers" after the 2010 midterms to take the pulse of those voters.
And you might think one of the questions that would seem obvious to ask these folks is how they reconcile their meme of self-reliance with the federal fodder they rake in.

What can a multi millonaire promise to the middle class who have been losing jobs to overseas, when he is one of those who exports the jobs? Our relative, and absolute poverty is increasing, and our so called 'political donations' are nothing but buying our public incumbents for the special interest groups. we have a choice to vote for Joe Mama, or Joe Blow, what is the real difference?
As much as I hate to agree,this kind of hateful rhetoric is exactly what the Nazis used to foment division and eventually violence on Jews and other ethnic minorities in Germany.Playing to people's baser need to feel both superior to and victimized by a targeted group is a technique used since man could first communicate.We as a civilization need to learn from history instead of repeating it over and over.Helping our fellow man lifts us all rather than diminish us.The few that would take unfair advantage of the kindness and compassion should not be used as justification to condemn the truly needy.
Wanted to respond to fair minded.Although I have nothing but anecdotal evidence to back my opinion,Healy's story seems to ring quite true.I live in a largely conservative part of the country and I hear the makers versus takers phrases on almost a daily basis.I don't think he slanted the story in the least.It's a narrative that conservative media has been trumpeting for months now and to depict it otherwise would be journalistic malpractice.
It is interesting reading various comments by the people at large; it is great that, we have a live population, not just some jerks that can not leave the TV for a few minutes to respond to the election results. Expecting that the politicians can solve our problems is like going to a carpenter to do a brain surgery. We shall have to go back to the basic cells of our society, to the families, our neighbors, have meetings, discuss the problems, and form the government from the bottom up. Politicians CREATE PROBLEMS, they do not solve anything except get rich at our expense. We the People, make our country, they are supposed to serve US, not the other way around. I will sooner trust my neighbor, than my representative who as a fake a as a sc-fi movie.
I just read a very interesting book by a famous attorney Gerry Spence who defended Karen Silkwood. This is what he says about our government:

Since the article is ‘addressing’ the attitudes of those who are unemployed because they are ‘lazy,’ I feel compelled to share with the readers the following story I was told by one of the unemployed ‘lazy’ members of our society. As the story goes, he being laid off, a lot of bills and responsibilities, no jobs around, after exhausting his unemployment benefits, contemplated a suicide. But thinking about it, he tried the last resort; Suicide Hot Line. When he called, his call went to Pakistan, and after he told them what he intended to do, they asked him if he can drive a truck. I can not vouch for the veracity since the story came from a stranger, but I could see the cynicism and a known fact that a number of suicides are directly correlated, if not caused by the loss of a job. Blaming the victim has been an ancient way of shedding the responsibility of the government to address the needs for honoring/fulfilling, the Basic Human Rights. These being the following: food and shelter, education, medical coverage, jobs, and the free speech. We are born with these rights, and lacking these rights, we become less human, or die. We DO NOT HAVE THESE RIGHTS HERE; they are the privileges of the well to do.

Some people have a VERY SHORT memory; historically speaking, it was the Republican Party that freed the slaves, while the Democratic Party had been the base of power for the slave owners that originated in Atlanta Georgia. But since the era of FDR, the roles have reversed; the final blow was passing of the Civil Rights Bill under LBJ. Now, we have the Republican Party espousing the negative, so called ‘conservative’ postulates, excuses for ripping off, and suppressing the rights of the poor, and the rest of the 47% (as the now infamous Romney labeled).
I am registered INDEPENDENT, and I can see that this pointing the fingers at the various parties leads not to the solutions of our social problems. We need to address the problems caused by GEED, the very system that permits degradation, and shameful exploitation of the weaker, the sick, and the poor. The more than 5,000,000 homeless, 65,000,000 Americans without ANY health insurance, and more than one third of the school children living in poverty is a consequence of the failures of BOTH Parties. It is time for us, the ‘little people’ to start a new process where all will have at a minimum the Basic Human Rights, in order to go in the ‘pursuit of happiness’ as the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America states so plainly.

I did read the whole article and still stand by what I said. Let me state categorically that I can not blame the banker 100% for his comments. He is a product of a very money oriented culture, education, training, the society where one’s value is not measured by one’s higher qualities, but by his wealth, his amount in the bank, his ranking as a millionaire, billionaire, or his power in the corporate America, or the government.

I was a bit surprised to see that Alaska has finally been eclipsed by Wyoming as the "Taker State," though Wyoming has long been #2.
Wyoming is almost 95% white, 1% African American, 2.6% Native American, 9% Hispanic of any race.
Alaska is 68% white, now only 15% Native American, an ethnicity that was in the majority there at the start of WW II.
In Alaska the states petroleum resources pay almost the entire cost of state government, thanks in no small part to a deal in which Native tribes traded the rights to resource extraction in exchange for some sovereignty.
In Alaska, any white person who got off the plane earlier than yesterday soon may acquire the odd notion that he (usually) "built the state." There is a prevailing myth of "independence." This is accompanied by substantial anti-Native prejudice.
The Native community votes about 90% Democratic. Among white voters, Republican partisan voter registrants may outnumber white Democratic registrants by almost 3-1.
The state of Alaska issues checks to every eligible man, woman and child (non-felon citizens) who has been living there over one year. During Sarah Palin's tenure, the per barrel price of oil wen to $144, leading to a $2,000+ annual dividend check. Palin, in a vote-buying frenzy, increased that by another $1,200 per person for supposed "energy rebates," to ostensibly offset the high costs of oil that year.
That very briefly made her the most popular governor in the U.S., but McCain never bothered to ask why before jumping from his frying pan.
What a great many low and middle income white voters in both states share is a substantially unjustified sense of entitlement. It leads to the resentment of having to share with others, those whom they believe they are somehow superior.
US census information on Wyoming's education system has provided some answers as to their citizen's apparent general lack of higher level thinking skills (embrace of thoughtless, quickie bumper sticker "answers" which dismiss the work it takes to more fully understand complex issues). Apparently Wyoming ranks the highest among all states in high school graduates (seemingly bestowing a diploma on any student who possesses a pulse), yet plummets drastically in its ranking for post secondary education. Combining this along with their overwhelmingly white population creates the perfect dream audience for Fox "News".
Wyoming: 2009 percentage of population 25 years old and over:
High School Graduate or Higher: 91.8% (Ranking 1 of 50)
Associate's Degree or Higher: 33.2% (Ranking 32 of 50)
Bachelor's Degree or Higher: 23.8% (Ranking 40 of 50)
Graduate/Professional Degree: 7.9% (Ranking 39 of 50)
Typical Wyoming blather. The state is run by welfare ranchers (who produce very little in terms of state domestic product) and the chamber of commerce (that expects 12 hours of work for 8 hours of pay). The "rugged individualist" bullshit is nothing more than just that. Guess it's a result of too much inbreeding. Wyoming is, at best, a strong argument for reapportioning the U.S. Senate on a population basis.

Facts probably doesn't matter to someone who is so emotionally invested in the "Blacks are the real racists" lie, but…
….there were 59, not 100, precincts when Romney got zero votes. Remember, this was in a state that passed voting restriction laws that were directly aimed at Black voters in Philly. Plus, it's not news that Blacks vote against Republicans. McCain got no votes in 55 Philly precincts in 2008.
Obama got 93%, not 97% of the Black vote nationally. In 2000 Al Gore (who was, quite famously, white) got 90%.

Have any data? No polling company has ever asked voters if they receive government assistance. Remember, Romney won 16 of the 20 states with the highest percentage of people who pay no income taxes while Obama won 16 of the 20 states with the lowest.

What we're all fighting for is the ability to penetrate the entrenched "thinking" of the uninformed, and what we end up doing, of course, is preaching to the choir. Real facts/data don't reach those who need it the most. Since the FCC Fairness (in media) Doctrine was dropped in 1985, we've become a nation which allows us to choose our ideology and tune to a news outlet which mirrors it – filtering out everything which contradicts the preferred "message" – thus creating the truly entrenched, polarized, splintered positions held by too many of us.
While writing this, Peter just weighed in with some "facty" responses to Michael e's post. I would hope Michael e would read it and adjust his thinking to accommodate the real data Peter provided ……. but not holding my breath.
My own take on the "bestowing gifts" argument from the right: Those of us who think ALL our citizens deserve a voice and an even playing field actually do think and believe in terms of "WE". The "I" people are those who believe "gifts" to bribe voters cost them the election. They cannot perceive that so many of us hard-working, productive "WE" people could possibly have cast our votes for "THEM". Those stuck in the "I" point of view are actually incapable of fathoming the existence of a sense of "WE", so to them it rings false. From a psychological point of view, their statements regarding greedy gift takers actually amount to the sheer projection of their own core Ayn Rand "values" onto the rest of us.

Smart people accept religion on faith, not logic. Do you plan to unite the people on the basis of religion, are you prepared to decide which one of ALL existing religions is “correct/true,” or are you ready to use the concepts of the all inclusive religion called Bahai? As far as I know, (and I am not a theologian), Bahais are the only one who accept any religion, so you may try them. To unite as many people as possible, find the common grounds, common problems, fears, desires, and be very tolerant for the differences. I am involved in the movement called NEIGHBORHOOD GATHERING. We meet just about every week, 20-30 of us neighbors, and discuss the past week, what happened to each of us, and what can we do to help each other (all pro-bono). There is a lot of material on the internet about this movement that will be grass-root Democracy, making the government from the common people (all in the future).

I am glad you mentioned about the NEIGHBORHOOD GATHERING not being a new concept, I knew that. What surprised me was that Spence saw that method of improving our society politics, as a very basic, reliable START. In the previous posting, you mentioned Upton Sinclair, and Sinclair Louis; I have read the works by both, The Jungle, Babbitt, Arrow Smith, etc. I still recall these books, even though we had these to read when I was 14-15 in our schools. I loved their works then, and now. I made our kids read these books, plus London, Dos Pasos, Pearl Back, Rousseau, Marx, Sagan, Homer, Dostoyevsky, and many others. My very first book I read was Uncle Tom’s Cabin. That book made me a Humanist, I still am now.
Yeah Bozidar, Happy says we did not read this article, but, I think he hasn't read the classics. The disconnect has a source.

Bozidar Im at a loss why you think anyone,and everyone at the top of a corporations are automatically designated parasites ,while those who "labor"(most wealthy folks I know work 14 hour days 6 days a week) are the true Americans.This idea that the recreation of wealth is an evil thing intrinsically- is against everything America and capitalism stands for.I sometimes wish Obama would just say wealthy people are evil.We should beggar them.I will share their ill gotten gains with all of you.If that be his truth say it ,do it,and be done with it.And I never said the vote was due to bribing did I?.It is more insidious than that.Republicans were trying to deliver the hard/bad news that the gravy train was over.That government, rich ,and middle class cant carry the load anymore.That they the government have failed you as a good steward of your wealth.The Dems said that is a lie.The rich can give a little more and all will be well again.So who was blowing smoke up that 47% skirt?Even Bill Clinton said that was a huge lie.If the rich gave 100% it would not make a dent.If obama got 100% of his tax wish list, it would but pay for the increase in food stamps under his dismal reign.I find it hysterical that Obama constantly uses Clinton as a model by the way.Saying if we had his tax levels all would be A ok.But when you demand from the Ds that they cut all other spending and economic levers to Clinton era levels they bawk…..Or just laugh their asses off.As far as jobs flowing out of the country…wanna change it?Cut corporate taxes to the lowest(not the highest )in the world.Make this country thee most business friendly country in the world.That would recreate wealth and jobs.Of course government would loose control(last thing they want)I heard Obama in a speech recently admit that" cutting taxes may bring more money in -but it is less fair".Think about that.He would rather have us all go broke than be "unfair'.A classic Obama moment.

I should like to remind you of the two VERY important facts; Our Federal Budget distribution, and our tax system. Please compare the corporate taxes for the corporations in 40’s, 50’s, and the 60’s, to the corporate taxes NOW. You will notice that they are nearly half of what they used to be. Thanks to Bush, and Reagan. Now, let us for a moment look at the Federal Budget made of the collected taxes; OVER 50% is for the so called DEFENSE! Our Defense Budget equals to the amount combined budgets of the rest of the world’s countries spent for the defense. This is where the money goes. Also, our government does not tax the profits that OUR corporations make over-seas. The profits from over-seas are stashed in the various tax-free countries world-wide. This goes also for the wealthy Americans who do not have corporations; this is hiding, defrauding our government. Look at the tax system in Europe, and then come back and throw that ‘smoke in the eyes.’ You are using a slogan of the rich that it is the ‘taxes,’ not the dirt cheap labor over-seas that make them export the jobs from our country. Our tax system is rigged to even allow the corporations to deduct from the profits made HERE the cost of EXPORTING the jobs over-sea. Are you aware of that! Do you really read about the corporate taxes world-wide, especially in the industrially highly developed countries? When was the last time you did it? The last radio made in the U.S. was in 1963, the last TV in 1972-3, and do not forget the shoe, and the textile industry, and down the line. When you call some corporate owned telephone for help, information, you call goes to India, Pakistan, or some other Asian country. Our State agencies are transferring the calls to be answered by the special places in India, Pakistan, or some other country. This is all done to eliminate the jobs from here. Do you live in the U.S. or where? Are you rich, or indifferent as to what is happening here in the U.S? Do you care about OUR country, and OUR people, or are you so filthy rich that you blinded by the heavy propaganda by the rich people?

To be clear, I don't think Healy had to beat the bushes very long to get the various teabagger quotes. I suspect you can't swing a microphone out there without finding folks that believe this stuff. I was just pushing back on Jim Naureckas' assertion that Healy gave these "self-congratulatory race-baiters" a megaphone…I think he was giving them the rope they used to hang themselves.

No, it wasn't racism. No, it's not statistically impossible. No, it wasn't voter fraud. No, "we" probably won't have voter ID soon.
Inner city African Americans have overwhelmingly voted for Democrats since 1968. There's nothing statistically impossible of an entire neighborhood voting the same way. [In some of the precincts third party candidates got some votes.] It wasn't voter fraud [in-person voter fraud doesn't exist] and the Pennsylvania voted ID law is on hold for now.
Earlier this year, according to court testimony, the state of Pennsylvania acknowledged it has never seen a case of in-person voter fraud.
The ID law was passed for one reason, as Pennsylvania House Majority Leader Mike Turzai who helped push the law through the Pennsylvania legislature this spring without a single Democratic vote explained in June, "Voter ID, which is going to allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania – done."
Why would anyone vote for a candidate from a party that was trying to take their vote away?

A 2011 study examined 280 of the largest companies in America and the taxes they paid in 2008, 2009, and 2010. All were Fortune 500 companies. And all were profitable.
25% of them paid federal taxes at a rate of less than 10% and 30 of these companies paid absolutely no income tax on their profits between 2008 and 2010.
78 companies had at least one year where they paid no income tax .

You are doing some progress; you started asking questions, made inquires, begun making conclusions based on facts. One advice, to get the CORRECT information about the corporate taxes for the U.S. corporations over-seas, either go to IRS, or have ‘your friend’ SHOW YOU HIS ACTUAL TAX DOCUMENTS, FOR HIS CORPORATION INCOME OVER-SEAS. When the first time you don’t succeed, try, and try again until you get the official, answer. The neighborhoods degrade, when the jobs leave the area. So, your ‘friend’s’ excuse for moving out the business as a result that the ‘neighborhood degraded’ is as phony as a $3.00 bill. He caused the plight of the area by moving the job out. I live in Florida, I don’t know in what over-sea tax heaven you live, but just visit some of the industrial areas like across the border in Mexico, and see the slums where those who work for our corporations for $2.00 per day live, or, you can get the info on the internet. I visited Jaures and Tijuana in Mexico, and the slums of Kampala Uganda where the people work for two dollars a day for COCA COLA, see the slums in other Latin America, and you will pick up some valuable knowledge as the benefits for the people working for our corporations.
As for our Defense budget, I stand firm on the claim that it is ASTRONOMICAL in proportion to the rest of the sectors for social spending, and in proportion what other countries are spending on their Defense budgets. One stealth bomber costs $2,200,000,000, one soldier in Afghanistan cost is $1,000,000, and that is not his salary. We do not need 1750 military bases world-wide, nor did God appoint the U.S. to be a policeman of the world. Our ,Military Industrial Complex,’ (as Eisenhower first named it), is a huge conglomeration that is siphoning exorbitant sums of money and wasting it to protect the property and the vested interests of the 2% of the owners in the U.S. It is time we pull back our sharp talons, and become peace promoting country, not like PAX ROMANA, practiced 2000 years ago by the Romans. Another thing, it was always the liberals who made progress in every society, our Founding Fathers were liberals, the Republicans who freed the slaves in the U.S. were liberals, the French Revolution was fought by the liberals, and so on. The die-hard conservatives Libertarians, have deliberately misnamed their party, in order to camouflage their real purpose which is to escape paying the taxes, to maximize their profits. They are as liberal, as the National Socialist Party (founded my Marx) under Hitler in Germany.
