[...] Action Alert: ABC, NBC Nuclear Boosterism [...]
Dear NBC,
Your reporting on the White House's nuclear power plans omitted key facts:
1. NBC parent company GE has a huge financial stake to the nuclear power industry.
2. Babcock & Wilcox, the would-be designer/builder of the proposed plants, was the designer/builder of Three Mile Island.
3. There is still no solution in the U.S. for the problem of nuclear waste, which is chemically & radiologically toxic and has a half-life of more than 50,000 years.
4. The Federal government has defaulted on its promise to provide for nuclear waste disposal, and is likely to be sued by the generators to whom it owes that obligation.
5. The economics of nuclear power are so weak that no utility would build any nuclear power plants without government subsidies.
Sincerely,
Frederick Keady P.E.

I guess you'd call those "glowing" reports on the nuke industry, wouldn't you?
And what would you call the bastards that propagate this propaganda?
How about "glow worms"?
To NBC news dept:
Your network's blatant bias towards the Obama administration's use of taxpayer money to underwrite the building of new nuclear power plants is typical of the corporate cheerleading section you've become.
Why not instead report on the question of why private funding for nuke plants has dried up? Or the fact that even the conservative Heritage Foundation opposes these loan guarantees on the backs of taxpaying Americans? Or the simple fact that we have yet to figure out a safe method for disposing of nuclear waste?
I know why. Because that would make you a REAL news source like DemocracyNow or Al Jazeera English (or McClatchey); and your corporate paymasters at nuke-friendly GE certainly can't have that, can they?
Sincerely,
Bob Soper

Sorry, my letter to NBC probably was a bit preachyâ┚¬Ã‚¦ but I'm just about at the end of my tether. How DARE they use our taxes to subsidize this disastrous, poisonous activity??
To ABC:
I wanted to ask why your reporting on the White House's nuclear power plans omitted important facts about nuclear power in favor of the optimistic projections of the nuclear industry?
Nuclear power critics have documented for years, the plants have proven to be financial disasters, with severe cost overruns and a general reluctance among investor.
Sincerely

Also, your parent company General Electricis a major player in the industry, and has done business with the company planning to build the Georgia plant (southerncompany.com)–a major fact NBC neglected to mention in its report.
The truth is that there is still no solution in the U.S. for the problem of nuclear waste, which is chemically & radiologically toxic and has a half-life of more than 50,000 years; not only that at least 27 of America's 104 aging atomic reactors are known to be leaking radioactive tritium, which is linked to cancer if inhaled or ingested through the throat or skin. The fallout has been fiercest at Vermont Yankee, where a flood of cover-ups has infuriated and terrified near neighbors who say the reactor was never meant to operate more than 30 years, and must now shut.

Dear Sirs:
I am writing to protest your incomplete and unbalanced reports on ABC Nightly News following Barack Obama's announcement of $8 billion in new loan guarantees for a nuclear power plant in Georgia.
While extensively quoting positive claims like job creation and enhanced safety claims, little is mentioned of the high costs, extreme danger and environmental damage involved in nuclear plants.
I urge you to make up for this gap in a future program featuring the warnings by outstanding nuclear watchdogs like David Kraft at NEIS and informed sources at Greenpeace and other environmental groups.
ABC owes this much to your listeners!

I have emailed a similar letter to NBC but can't find an email addre3ss for ABC.
Our local DeKalb Interfaith Network for Peace & Justice is sponsoring a debate on the subject of the proposed nuclear plant expansion in Illinois on Tues. Feb. 23 at 7 pm in the Lincoln Room of Holmes Student Center, Northern Illinois University, DeKalb IL 60115. David Kraft, NEIS, will point out the negatives, whereas (First Name?) Abboud (former ComEd nuclear scientist) will take the pro-nuke position. The Public is invited to this event which is free of charge.
Cecile Meyer (recent widow of Dr. Axel Meyer, Reetired Professor of Physics, NIU–avid opponent of both nuclear power & nuclear weapons.
Dear NBC people
The President's plans for more nuclear power plants is distressing at best and will be another financial burden we the people can't handle. I am concerned about the lack of reporting of the president's ties to the industry (Exalon in particular) and, in NBC's parent company's financial ties to the nuclear industry. This is not what we need at this time. We need clear unbiased and honest reporting. Are you capable of this? For the sake of tomorrow's children educate yourselves and the public. We here in New Mexico know all too well about the consequences of actions like these. Do we need more energy sources outside of coal, yes we do, but this is not the answer. Here in New Mexico we have enough sun power if harnessed to take care of several state's needs.
sincerely

Dear NBC/GE,
Wow, you actually failed to disclose how deeply connected to the nuclear industry your parent company GE actually is. For the folks that don't know, it's a propaganda plus for you?
But, for the the millions who do know, well, your spots are showing.
You will be hearing from us quite a bit over that.
And, I can't help but noting, your behavior is deceptive, and in a very real way, disloyal to the principles NBC was founded on.
Shame, shame, shame on you.
A parent corporation which does not have truth in reporting at the core of its journalistic arm, is to me, a threat to true freedom.
Good night, and good luck.

NBC version:
Amidst all the wide-eyed wonder of Obama's reintroduction of domestic nuclear power, the media need to take a hard look at WHY there have been no new US n-plants in 30 years.
Terrible economics, terrible safety, environmental problems, need to isolate waste for a quarter-million years, risk of terrorism…these are just a few of the issues.
And the reality is we don't need them. We are fully capable both of slashing our energy consumption with no lifestyle sacrifice and of harnessing energy from truly safe sources like solar and wind. President Obama is making a mistake in championing this failed technology, and the media is making a mistake in failing to examine WHY there was so much opposition.

ABC version with 500-character limit:
The media need to take a hard look at WHY we've had no new n-plants in 30 years: Terrible economics/ safety, environmental problems, need to isolate waste for 250,000 years, terrorism…
Let's slash energy consumption with no lifestyle sacrifice and harness energy from solar & wind.
