In the period before 1880, Sudan was supported by slavery, and was the focal point for African slaves moving East. The Brits corrected that problem by wiping out 125,000 of the Madhi's army, and brought peace to the land. Then they built it up, and in 50 years of "evil subjugation", built a postal system, universities, roads, and a self-sustaining infrastructure. Shortly after the Brits left, the Mau-Mau's rose up and began the slaughter all over again, and Sudan has been downhill ever since. Now it's oil, and Chinese money, and drought. Remember, this is one of the 4 countries that Bin Laden wants to fight the US in. Perhaps the next president will invade.
